During 1777, at a critical point in the American Revolution, George Washington faced severe political and military setbacks in Pennsylvania. This course examines the period from the Battle of Brandywine Creek in September 1777 through the Battle of Monmouth Court House in June 1778, analyzing how these events tested Washington’s leadership and authority. Major topics include organized efforts to remove or limit Washington’s role as commander-in-chief, the hardships and lasting significance of the encampment at Valley Forge, and Washington’s eventual political and strategic recovery following the Battle of Monmouth.
