The early years of the American South are often glossed over in history. While you may be familiar with Revolutionary War battles such as Long Island and Saratoga, fewer people know about pivotal southern engagements like Guilford Courthouse and Cowpens. This course will explore the southern campaigns that led to the American and French victory at Yorktown and examine the Revolutionary War from the perspective of the southern states, including Maryland. Sessions will consider why the South supported independence, how southern colonies responded to the outbreak of war, how southern Americans reacted when the British moved to retake the region, and the broader impact of the American Revolution on the southern states.
