Join award-winning local documentarian, author and historian Chris Haugh for a walking tour through one of Baltimore’s most historic burial grounds, Green Mount Cemetery. Located in the center of Baltimore, this burying ground was one of the earliest garden cemeteries, opening in 1839 and noted for the large number of historical figures interred in its grounds as well as many prominent Baltimore-area families. It retained the name Green Mount when the land was purchased from the heirs of Baltimore merchant Robert Oliver. We will visit the graves of John Wilkes Booth, Johns Hopkins, Benjamin H. Latrobe, Allen Dulles and Enoch Pratt. More importantly for this tour, our guide will point out, and discuss in full, decedents buried here having direct ties to Frederick County such as John Nelson and Charles Shipley. Chris writes a blog entitled “Stories in Stone” and serves as Preservation Manager and Historian of Frederick’s historic Mount Olivet Cemetery. Bring your walking shoes as we plan to cover a few miles through the sloping terrain of Green Mount. The tour will last until 1pm. We will then head to the oldest public market in the United State, the famous Lexington Market, where you will be to enjoy a late lunch on your own at one of the many food stands located in this historic space.
