Aging is a sacred journey, a pilgrimage from birth to life. It is a time of spiritual depth, wisdom, and evolving vocation. While aging may present its challenges, it also invites deep reflection on divine purpose, wisdom, and new opportunities to serve. In this course, we will explore aging through a biblical worldview, examining the role of elders in Ancient Near Eastern societies, the call to spiritual maturity, and the potential for new vocations later in life. Central to our discussion will be how the biblical perspective actively counters ageism in the church, advocating for the honor and inclusion of older adults. We will explore the call to value the wisdom and experiences of our elders, emphasizing the importance of intergenerational relationships and community that respects and empowers people at every stage of life. Through Scripture, theological reflection, and discussion, participants will develop a vision of aging that is rich with purpose, wisdom, and ongoing opportunities for growth, while acknowledging the real challenges of aging and the need for support and community. This course on the theology of aging is designed to explore the concept of aging from a scholarly biblical studies and theological perspective. It is not intended to proselytize or require participants to hold any specific religious beliefs, nor is being a Christian a prerequisite for participation. Rooted in academic exploration, ideas can be discussed, questioned, and challenged in an open and respectful environment.
