Congressional Cemetery bills itself as the only American “cemetery of national memory” founded before the Civil War. Join award-winning local documentarian, author and historian Chris Haugh for a walking tour through one of Washington D.C.’s most historic burial grounds, Congressional Cemetery. Located on E Street in Southeast on the west bank of the Anacostia River, this burying ground was established in 1807 and hosts over 65,000 interments, including many individuals who helped form the nation and nations’ capital in the early 19th century. We will visit the graves of Matthew Brady, J. Edgar Hoover, George Hadfield, Cokie Roberts, John Philip Sousa and others. More importantly for this tour, our guide will point out, and discuss in full, decedents buried here having direct ties to Frederick County such as Robert Mills and McClintock Young, Sr. Bring your walking shoes as we plan to cover a few miles through the hilly terrain and pathways of the cemetery. The tour will last until 1 pm. We will then head to Potomac Park in Montgomery County where you will be able to enjoy a late lunch on your own at one of the many restaurants located in this new and vibrant neighborhood.
