Over 200 years ago, a 20-year-old Mary Shelley anonymously published Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, a story that revolutionized horror and science fiction, as well as introduced one of the western world's most iconic monsters - Frankenstein’s Creature. Since then, this tale and its infamous characters have been adapted, referenced, and riffed on across fiction, stage, and screen, becoming a cultural mainstay. Learn more about the inspiration and impact of Frankenstein, as well as its fascinating creation and publication, as we explore themes such as ambition, alienation, monstrosity, and more. Let’s answer one of literature's most enigmatic questions: what is the line between man and monster? We recommend reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, prior to class. The novel is available online for free. If you want a physical copy, we recommend purchasing the 1818 text/edition of the novel.
