George Washington was the first of two Federalist presidents of the United States. This course will cover his and other Federalist beliefs, and how the American Revolution helped mold these beliefs. Understand the four-point program of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton to create a strong economy. Assess how the implementation of this program helped cause the western Whiskey Rebellion and the formation of the Democratic-Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. See how the French Revolution and their ensuing war with England contributed to Jefferson splitting from the Washington administration. Finally, the course will cover relations with Great Britain, particularly in regard to Washington’s Old Northwestern Indian War and the controversial Jay’s Treaty, designed to avert another war with England.
