C&O Canal Dam 4 Walk

Dam 4 and its associated structures make it an engineering and historically complex location. Highlighted will be the current masonry dam and its abutments with history about the first dam. The waterpower generating station on the West Virginia side will be discussed as well as the guard walls and guard gate. Participants then drive one mile to the Dam 4 recreation area parking lot from which they walk to the inlet lock that is discussed along with its associated structures. Finally, the group walks along Big Slackwater approximately a mile, to the beginning of the section of restored Slackwater towpath beside the river before returning to their cars at the recreation area.  This tour involves moderate walking on flat terrain. Students should provide their own water and food and their own transportation to the tour location. There is ample parking available on site. No refunds after close of business on 6/3.  Rain date is 6/17.
