This class is designed to study the foundations of jazz theory, harmony, improvisation and the historical context of the songs presented. It is for those new to jazz or those who wish to brush up on their jazz playing skills and knowledge. Students will learn the role of each instrument and how they interact with each other in a jazz band. 7-8 songs will be presented and rehearsed during the semester. The students are expected to apply the theory they have learned to these songs in private practice. All students will perform in a final concert at the end the end of the semester.

Please read:  Students need to bring their own instrument and all accessories. A limited number of amplifiers will be available to guitarists and bassists. Students must be able to print out music that will be emailed to them. They must also bring manuscript and plain paper to take notes. Class is co-Listed with MUSC119-1.
