This lecture will focus on Frederick history as seen through the eyes of two diary writers, Jacob Englebrecht and Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell. Jacob Englebrecht was a beloved mayor who kept records of informative and notable events happening in Frederick from 1819 to 1878. He gave us a picture of life in Frederick with his colorful and sometimes humorous entries. Catherine Susannah Thomas Markell; entries teach us about her experience as a woman during the Civil War.
