The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal--built as a commercial waterway through Frederick County alongside the unnavigable Potomac River when the nation was young--was doomed almost from the start by the railroad, and then put out of business altogether by river floods. Now a National Park, it is a cherished outdoor spot by cyclists, hikers, and others. This lecture and walking class examines the canal's history, especially the varied engineering marvels of its time, and as a place of both recreation and natural beauty today. The 2nd session will take place along the Dickerson section of the canal and will feature two very special trees. The walk is less than 2 miles with some elevation changes along dirt and gravel pathways. Students are to provide their own transportation to the meet up location for the walk.
