Course number : LIR307   ID : 27271    Section Number : 1
« back to classes page
South Mountain stands as the first battlefield loss of General Robert E. Lee. Lee did not expect to fight here; he did not intend to defend the mountain's gaps. He did not anticipate a retreat - nearly terminating the first invasion of the North. Something went wrong with the Confederate chieftain's plans. We will visit where it happened. We will explain why it happened. We will explore Maryland's first full-scale Civil War battlefield - right in our backyard. This tour involves moderate walking and standing on mostly flat surfaces. Expect to walk up to a distance of 1 mile spread throughout the day. A sit down lunch at a local restaurant is included in the fee.
