NEW CONTENT EACH TERM!
The Middle East is one of the most fascinating and newsworthy areas of the world. For the uninitiated, entrenched stereotypes and recurring soundbites reduce the diversity and complexity of this vitally important area to a simplistic “one-size-fits-all” monolith.
“Current Issues in the Middle East,” one of the most popular ongoing courses in the ILR’s Middle East program, is designed to explore and explain the shifting dynamics of this historic region. Each week, the latest news from the region will be presented and contextualized. Based on current events as they unfold, the instructor, a career educator and area specialist, will draw upon a vast array of resources to explain breaking developments in a historical context, identifying key players, exploring interrelationships, and analyzing their impact on the region and the world.
Topics will be driven by the news. Among those being considered this term are: an analysis of the Gaza war and the future of the Palestinian people in occupied territories, prospects toward a just and lasting peace in the Holy Land, the role of the United States in brokering peace in the Middle East, the viability of a two-state solution, leadership in Israel, the future of existing regional alliances and non-state actors, prospects for future normalization agreements, freedom of navigation in vital waterways, widening gaps between rulers and citizens, an uneasy truce in Yemen, escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, continuing warfare in Syria and Sudan, and the dynamics of multilateral relations among Middle Eastern countries with global powers. With the eyes of the world focused on the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the candidates’ policy statements and priorities, as well as their ramifications, will be analyzed.
Through lectures, selected readings, regional media, films, guest speakers, and group discussion, it is expected that after taking this course participants will be better equipped to understand and address some of the most critical issues of our time with a greater level of confidence.
